The world is a dimmer place as I awoke to hear the passing of the poet, author, and one hell of a lady Maya Angelou. As I teenager I can remember watching Why the Caged Bird Sings and being horrified by it. It wasn’t until years later that I realised this movie was based on someone’s real childhood and this morning I learnt it was the beautiful and wise Maya Angelou’s childhood. I’ve seen Dr Angelou’s quotes everywhere and have always thought her words are so wise. I am also in awe of her absolute passion to live life to the utter fullest.
To respond to Maya’s words about remembering how someone made you feel; I can say you made me feel empowered, strong and proud to be a woman who shared the same earth as you. RIP.
In memory of Maya and of another brilliant poet Judith Wright (who is Australian by the way and was a fierce protector of Animals as well as Indigenous and women’s rights in her time) I’d like to add 2 poems:
Phenomenal Woman – Maya Angelou
Eve to her Daughters – Judith Wright (apologies for the jpeg I had to make this one myself)
